All persons who electronically file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Services (IRS) are required to register with the IRS and obtain an Authorize IRS e-File Provider Number (EFIN). The IRS maintains a verification tool named the “Authorized IRS e-file Provider Locator Tool”; where the general public can verify if someone is register as an Electronic Return Originator Authorized IRS e-file Provider with the IRS. All persons who prepare Puerto Rico tax returns for compensation are required to register with the Puerto Rico Treasury Department (Hacienda) and obtain a Tax Return Specialist Registration Number. Hacienda maintains a verification list named the “Lista de Especialistas en Planillas, Declaraciones o Reclamaciones de Reintegro” (List of Tax Returns, Statements or Refund Claims Specialists); where the general public can verify if someone is register as a Tax Return Specialist with Hacienda. All persons who are licensed as a Certified Public Accountant by the Government of Puerto Rico are under the professional jurisdiction of the Puerto Rico Board of Accountancy. The P.R. Board of Accountancy maintains a verification tool named CPA Verify; where the general public can verify if someone is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant by the P.R. Government. All persons who are licensed as a Certified Public Accountant by the Government of Puerto Rico are required to maintain active membership in good standing with the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants (Colegio CPA). The Colegio CPA maintains a verification tool named the “Directorio de Colegiados” (Member’s Directory); where the general public can verify if a Puerto Rico Certified Public Accountant maintains membership in good standing with the Colegio de CPA.
